The Best of the Previous Six Years

Since my Best of the Year lists are moving from Exclacomma to here I thought I'd transfer all the Best Of lists here for posterity. Future generations will want to know. Each year had a best of list and a predictive best of list for the following year.

With new commentary in italics!

Albums of 2004
The Elected - Me First
Arcade Fire - Funeral
One the best regarded albums of the last ten years places second after a forgotten Rilo Kiley side-project. I must regret that decision, right? Nope!
Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous
Kleptones - A Night At The Hip Hopera
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat

Singles of 2004
The Elected - A Time For Emily
The Walkmen - The Rat
Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
Viva Voce - Alive With Pleasure
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out

Movies of 2004
Spiderman 2
Sideways
I could have sworn Sideways was my favorite movie of whatever year it came out. But if Spiderman 2 came out in the same year I stand corrected. Spiderman 2 in incredible!
The Yes Men
Napoleon Dynamite
Do I regret naming this movie so high? No. You only think that because you're an idiot that didn't hear about it until it was a Hot Topic staple.
Dawn of The Dead

Television Series of 2004
Gilmore Girls
Lost
The Amazing Race 5
The Amazing Race 6
Arrested Development
Okay, I stand by AD being under Gilmore Girls. And Lost was exciting that first year before becoming the worst thing man has ever made. I do question putting it behind TWO seasons of The Amazing Race though.

Rock Shows of 2004
Pixies @ Fine Line Music Cafe, Minneapolis
Long Winters/Natural History @ Union South, Madison
Arcade Fire @ Mad Planet, Milwaukee (twice)
Wow, 2004 was a banner year for concerts. I still say that first Pixies concert in 13 years was the best concert I've ever been to. You can see me in the Pixies documentary loudQUIETloud if you try really hard. But the second best concert is the first time I saw Arcade Fire, thankfully skipping my ten year high school reunion, opening for one of The Unicorns last concerts.
Rilo Kiley @ Abbey Pub, Chicago
Fiery Furnaces @ The Annex, Madison

Don't Slit Your Wrists Just Yet
Things to look forward to in 2005
:
The Complete Calvin And Hobbes
Revenge of the Sith
Um, no.
Zooey Deschanel in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
More Zombie movies!
And a Jenny Lewis solo album
Oh yeah, and the love of your family and friends or some crap.

Best of 2007
Since most of you are a little slow on the lists here's a head start on 2007:

Best of 2008
Movies

1. Tropic Thunder
The only movie I wanted to see again immediately after watching it.
This is the movie I'm probably least happy with being number one. I wouldn't know what to replace it with, though. Maybe switching it with Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Maybe replacing it with the saddest movie ever made, Dear Zachary. But probably Timecrimes is most retroactively worthy.
2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
The only movie I watched three times and still want to see right now. Does anyone have it?
3. Cloverfield
4. In Bruges
5. (tie) Burn After Reading
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Holy shit, the director of the most overrated movie ever made (Pan's Labyrinth, god I loathe you) made a good movie.

Most Disappointing Movies
1. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
David Fincher makes Forrest Gump 2? I'm devastated.
2. Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull
I was with you through the CGI groundhogs, the Lost Ark warehouse, nuking the fridge, Mutt being your son. But Fuck you with the killer ants and "knowledge was their treasure"
3. The Strangers
Funny Games kinda fuck up your shit, didn't they?
4. Be Kind Rewind
So close to being fun. But even closer to being tedious crap.
5. The Visitor
Being critically acclaimed doesn't make you any less a shitty movie about a white guy discovering his true self though ethnic people's food and drum playing. Holy fuck I couldn't hate you more, even though I love Richard Jenkins. You made post-9/11 xenophobia pretty attractive to me, if it means keeping out terrible drum circles, African jewelry and useless cultural sensitivity.
This is great. The Visitor is probably the worst critically acclaimed movie I've ever seen. Maybe I'm Not There is worse but I couldn't make it all the way through.

Television
I was wrong, there was TV in 2008:
1. The Wire
I finally saw a Wire in the same year it aired. The news room story line was much better than the school story line last year, no matter what conventional wisdom says. Fuck you conventional wisdom!
2. How I Met Your Mother
I don't even know how to talk to people that haven't seen HIMYM. It's the only laugh track sit-com ever that doesn't have to be funny to be entertaining. Although its very often hilarious.
3. 30 Rock
Only this low because it's had a slow start this season. Although:
"Don't let them win! Cat anus!"
"If I wanted to lick a hippie I'd just return Joan Baez's phone calls."
"Don't worry. It's just a Japanese sex doll in daddy's bed"
"It's like an owl not wearing a graduation cap: heartbreaking!"
"a small but prestigious clowning academy"!
4. The Office
5. The Colbert Report

Albums
1. We Brave Bee Stings and All - Thao with the Get Down Stay Down
2. Re-Arrange Us - Mates of State
Yeah, it sounds like all their other albums. That didn't stop it from being the CD I picked up more than any other.
3. (tie) Feed The Animals - Girl Talk
Timezones - Law
5. Flight of the Conchords - S/T

Songs
1. Knee Deep At ATP - Los Campesinos!
2. Lullaby Haze - Mates of State
3. Swimming Pools - Thao Nguyen
4. Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? - She & Him
5. January Showers - Law
6. In Step - Girl Talk
7. My Drive Thru - Julian Casablancas, Santogold, and Pharrell Williams
Who says a song written for a Converse Commercial can't be good?
8. California (is 4 Fuckers) - Pigeon
The only band that combined thrash metal with twee, ever. Ensuring that no one would ever love this record. Well, I love this song anyway.
9. That's Not My Name - The Ting Tings
10. OMC Snobot - MC Chris
11. Better Things - Passion Pit
12.Electric Feel - MGMT
13. Business Time - Flight of the Conchords
14. (tie) It's The Love -The Breeders
Loose Dancing - Team 9
You can tell when I still listened to music. I couldn't list less than 15 songs as my favorite.

Shows
1. Thao Nguyen - Cafe Montmartre
2. Girl Talk - Great Hall
3. The Islands / Parts & Labor - Club 770
4. Leslie and the Ly's - Majestic
5. Matt and Kim - Club 770

Books
1. Night of the Gun - David Carr
2. Growing Up Haunted - Jennifer Finney Boylan
3. American Wife - Curtis Sittenfeld
4. Bumping Into Geniuses - Danny Goldberg
5. The Walking Dead - Robert Kirkman

Internet
1. Bleedingskull.com
My bible for good-bad horror movies.
2. Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
Solidifying Neil Patrick Harris as the coolest person in the universe
3. Take on Me: Literal Video Version
"I'm gonna kick ass with my own pipe wrench"
4. avclub.com
Ask avclub, The New Cult Canon, My Year of Flops, the best commentators
God bless the avclub
The commentators, I'm guessing with numbers, have gotten a lot worse. Still a good site.
5. Movies on Hulu
28 Days Later, Ghoulies II, Go, Near Dark, Parents, The Thing, The Toxic Avenger
And that's just RIGHT NOW.

Best Bad Movies from Bad Movie Night
1. Lady Terminator
Blatant rip-off of Terminator scenes, gratuitous nudity and a mulleted character named Snake
2. Boardinghouse - Does a woman turn into a pig in this?
3. Winterbeast - Claymatation will always win out.
4. Riki-Oh - Strangled someone with their own intestines? You win.
5. Elves- Hey!, this only had one elf. Fuckers.

Best of 2009
Hey a lot of you lived in the world this year. For the others:
Movies

1. Inglorious Bastards
Tarantino says it's his best script ever.
2. Arrested Development
If it happens.
3. A Serious Man
I could watch the Coen Brothers direct the phone book.

Yay, a Judd Apatow movie. Oh crap, an Adam Sandler movie.
6. Drag Me To Hell
Sam Raimi's first horror movie since the Evil Dead movies.

Diablo Cody writes this year's Teeth.
8. Splice
Sarah Polley's first horror movie since Dawn of the Dead.

Romero's next, untitled zombie movie.
10. Cell
11. Avatar
12. Terminator Salvation
As long as McG doesn't go all full throttle on it.

14. Playboy
15. The Evil Dead
16. Public Enemies
I see all movies filmed in downtown Columbus, WI.
17. The Box
The Donnie Darko director tries to redeem himself after Southland Tales.
239. The Fantastic Mr. Fo

New Television
1. Dollhouse
Yay, from the guy who did Buffy. Oh crap, from the guy who did Firefly.
Didn't even bother watching it.
2. The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien
This turned out good.
3. Sit Down, Shut Up
Arrested Development may have been a fluke.
4. Untitled Office spin-off
This turned into Park and Recreation. I turned great!
5. The United States of Tara

Music

This list makes me sad. I hate music now.
Half of them didn't happen. The other half were indeed not good. Goodbye music!

Best of 2009
Movies

1. Inglourious Basterds
Holy shit, I accurately predicted the number one movie 12 months ago! Given my new found powers I declare the number two movie on that 2008 list the best movie of 2010 since it didn't actually come out in 2009.
2. Let the Right One In
It didn't come out in 2009? Fuck you! It didn't have a wide release until this year, how the fuck was I supposed to see it? Drive to fucking New York? Download it on one of your "bit torrents"? Anyway this movie marks the first great vampire movie ever.
3. Not Quite Hollywood
Also gets the award for best opening credits sequence.
4. Drag Me To Hell
This Sunday at 7! It's directed by Sam Raimi, making my dog's name still relevant. What's Frank Gehry done recently? Oh, is it twisty? How about Stephen Colbert? Huh, I wouldn't know I watch Conan now.
5. I Love You, Man
Fucking Jason Segel and his consistently quality products.
6. Crank 2: High Voltage
Did the characters in your favorite movie this year turn into Japanese monsters at one point? Was the bad guy a head in a tank? Did Amy Smart have sex on a horse racing track as the race was happening? Well your favorite movie is crap!
7. Martyrs
If you're talking to someone that thinks Martyrs was better than Let the Right One In you are talking to a douche bag. Still a good movie though.

Television
1. Parks and Recreation
When did this turn great?
2. Community
3. How I Met Your Mother
The only show on this list not on Thursday.
4. Attack of the Show
Although this show is on every weekday
5. (tie) The Office and 30 Rock
Why watch anything not on Thursday?

Albums
1. Know Better Learn Faster - Thao With the Get Down Stay Down
That's two number one albums in a row. That clinches it. Thao is my new favorite artist, moving aside Rilo Kiley. Tough break Rilo Kiley!
2. Manners - Passion Pit
So they reused Sleepyhead. It's still great.
3. Fortress Round My Heart - Ida Maria
Go Norway!
4. Now We Can See - The Thermals
5. LP - Discovery
Who knew combining Ra Ra Riot and Vampire Weekend would make for some interesting music. Can we combine Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective? Maybe something listenable will come out.

Songs
1. I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked - Ida Maria
2. Cool Yourself - Thao With the Get Down Stay Down
3. No More Pirates - Chris Garneau
Although Dirty Night Clowns by Chris Garneau wins best title of the year.
4. Islands - XX
5. Body - Thao With the Get Down Stay Down
Two in the top five! Fuck you Rilo Kiley.
6. Zero - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
7. Little Secrets - Passion Pit
8. Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi
9. Swing Tree - Discovery
10. I Only Love You For Your Car - Immaculate Machine

Books
1. I'm Down: A Memoir - Mishna Wolff
About growing up white with a father who wishes he (and the author) was black.
2. This Is Where I Leave You - Jonathan Tropper
Best opening of any book this year where a man gets a birthday cake shoved up his ass and his balls start on fire.
3. The Walking Dead - Robert Kirkman
Soon to be a series on AMC apparently. This would make a good lead in for Mad Men.
4. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance - Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem! - Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith
5. Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli

Internet
1. Mondomovie.com
I thankfully discovered them and their 3 year backlog making my walk to work more tolerable.
2. AVClub.com
The third place I visit every morning after e-mail and news.
3. Jordon Jesse Go!
When I was running out of Mondo Movies, JJ Go came to the rescue.
4. Everything is Terrible
This "Michael Rules" envelope was headed to me! I do rule.
5. Three Frames
Bad Movie Night attendees will recognize a lot of these.

Bad Movie Night Movies
From our 100th movie on since I already made a list for the first 99.
1. The Room
2. Silent Night Deadly Night 2
Transcended the whole Garbage Day meme into greatness If you get past the first 40 minutes of flashbacks.
3. Nightmare Weekend
4. Mailbu High
You know, where the high school student is getting bad grades so she becomes a prostitute hit woman.
5. Pieces

Best of 2010
Movies

1. Iron Man 2
Whoever is making Iron Man's trailers should be directing their own movies.
And who ever is making Iron Man 2 should be making the trailers to Cowboys & Aliens. Ah, fuck that looks really good.
2. Hot Tub Time Machine

Find anything wrong about that title.
That title was good. Yeah...
3. Looper
4. The Expendables
Look at this cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Trejo and Charisma Carpenter.
5. Machete
6. Kick-Ass
7. Youth In Revolt

10. Shutter Island
11. Jonah Hex

15. Nightmare on Elm Street
16. Clash of the Titans
And two movies that did the festival circuit but come out on DVD in 2010:
17. Bad Biology
18. Black Dynamite
Proof that direct-to-DVD movies are better then the rest of us.

Music
1. Los Campesinos! - Romance Is Boring
2. Arcade Fire - TBA
3. Broken Social Scene - TBA
4. The Avalanches - TBA
I'm getting less and less excited about this every year it makes this list.

7. Of Montreal - False Priest
8. She & Him - Vol. 2
9. Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1
10. Quasi - American Gong
11. Menomena - TBA
12. The Apples in Stereo - TBA
Hey, this doesn't look half bad, maybe music is back this year!
Yeah, no.
