New Car Movie Night

Before we start the month of October with a Halloweenapaloozaploitation we should check out what's happening in movies this year. The theme of the year is cars, what with Fast Five and Cars 2 topping the charts, Drive getting some of the best reviews of the year and there being a car in nearly every movie this year.

The focus of Rubber is only on the tire but it's a car tire. This ain't no movie about a wheelbarrow tire. Don't be gross. Admittedly, when I first heard there was a killer tire movie I wasn't interested. Being silly on purpose doesn't usually work. But then I started hearing good things and I watched the first 20 minutes and I was sold. I mean, we once watched a movie about killer yogurt:

or that slasher movie Killer Workout where people are killed by a large novelty safety pin:

I need to find more David A. Prior movies. He also did Deadly Prey! What was my point? Oh, revolution is the best school for the proletariat.

Drive Angry was filmed in 3-D. At great expense they have flattened it so we may view it in my living room.

Tom Atkins is in this! I'm so happy that he can now be added to the Five Timers Club.

Night of the Creeps
Desperate Lives
Escape From New York
Creepshow
Drive Angry

Escaping Los Angeles Movie Night

The theme for these movies initially was that in Mac and Me people are moving to L.A. and in Escape From L.A. people are doing the titular action. But the more I think about it, Mac is trying to escape L.A. too so he can find his naked family and go back to their naked planet.

Mac and Me currently has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but the New York Times does say it has "residual charm". Enjoy this movie's charm residue people. Apparently Jennifer Aniston is an uncredited extra so we'll have to look out for that. Nikki Cox is an uncredited dancer. Let's ignore that. This will be George "Buck" Flower's fourth movie at BMN. One more and we start counting. Maybe with whatever this is:

Mac and Me lost out to Cocktail in the 1988 Razzies but it did win worst director.

Stewart Raffill would land on his feet, however, with Mannequin: On the Move and Tammy and the T-Rex.

Here's the entire movie.

Escape From L.A. is the sequel to Escape From New York, which we watched for Impending Remake Night. Looks like they're still talking about remaking EFNY but the Fright Night remake was in theaters a couple of weeks ago. I heard it was good! A remake of EFNY couldn't manage the all-star cast of EFLA: Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi, Peter Fonda, Cliff Robertson, Stacy Keach, Pam Grier, Bruce Campbell, Breckin Meyer and Paul Bartel.

That makes this the sixth appearance by Paul Bartel:

And Bruce Campbell only needs one more to be in the 5 timers club. Unless his uncredited dubbing in The Dead Next Door counts.

Does it?

South East Asian Movie Night

Sure this BMN is designed to appeal mostly to me but it's also South East Asian Night because I love what they're doing over there. I listed the Canadian movies we've seen last week but check out the South East Asian movies we've seen:

Mystics in Bali
The Boxer's Omen
The Stabilizer
Raw Force
The Devil's Sword
For Y'ur Height Only
Lady Terminator

And probably some others but I got sick of looking through the list. Look, the point is those movies are amazing. They're some of my favorites. I often say Lady Terminator is my very favorite. So Canada can go eat french fries and cheese curds covered in gravy for all I care, I'm with the SE Asians.

Hey, did you notice how there's no Satan anymore? That's because the guy in The Killing of Satan got rid of him in 1983. Oops, I gave away the ending. I might as well go though the whole thing now. After the threat of never-ending torture is gone Earth turns into a free-for-all fuckfest. The population balloons to 50 billion, there's mass starvation, war, misery. Thanks a lot Lando for killing Satan. Geez. Oh, hey, did I mention the main character is named Lando?

Why, you slimy, double-crossing, no-good Satan.*

The Intruder shouldn't be confused with Intruder, that grocery store horror movie that Sam Raimi was in. It stars Peter O'Brian from The Stabilizer, remember?

He has quite the interesting trivia section on Wikipedia that includes:

  • Peter O'Brian is known as P'OB to his fans
  • O'Brians most eloquent and interesting character is "Peter" in Jungle Heat. O'Brian expertly juxtaposes the character's tendency to use foul language with his "wow" expression in the scene where Peter is chosen as the suitor.
  • When filming The Intruder, Peter O'Brian actually took a severe blow to the sternum during a fight scene. When asked if he was in pain he responded "pain is weakness leaving the body".

This guy's the real Dalton!

Speaking of  weird things on Wikipedia, the picture on the entry for The Intruder shows the wrong The Intruder. Believe me, this movie isn't as classy as that one looks.

My copy does have one of my favorite things, subtitles from a different language on it, like Thunder of Gigantic Serpent! Anyway, The Intruder takes place in Indonesia so let's say it's in honor of one of my favorite bands, OJ Law, who are from Indonesia and are releasing a new album today.

Bonus third movie? How about director of Lady Terminator H. Tjut Djalil's other killer woman movie Dangerous Seductress:

Canadian Movie Night

The conceit of Friday's BMN theme is that the movies have been too good lately so we're watching Canadian movies to ensure they're worse. But one of those "too good" movies was Hobo With a Shotgun, a Canadian movie! And from what I gather from the website Canuxploitation here are some other Canadian movies we've seen at BMN:

Black Christmas
Ginger Snaps
Pin: A Plastic Nightmare
The Pit
My Bloody Valentine
Happy Birthday To Me
Rock 'N' Roll Nightmare

Most of these are just legitimately good. I don't know if The Pit is like that on purpose but Rock 'N' Roll Nightmare is one of the best bad movies we've seen. Speaking of, Jon Mikl Thor's other starring role was in a movie called Zombie Nightmare and since I've been into planning the bonus third movie lately let's watch that. I only have the MST3K version:

To learn more about the Cinema of Canada I suggest you read one of my favorite entry titles on Wikipedia: Case Studies: Porky's and Meatballs.

How I wish I had Things when we watched The Thing or even The Stuff. What a great double feature that would be. Things is one of the few movies people on IMDB have chosen to tag as "Unintentional Humor". After Friday we will have seen 11 out of 19 of those movies. We've really accomplished something here.

If you had cable in the late eighties and ever turned it on, you've seen The Gate. But can you say you've seen it recently? Plus it features Toronto's own Killer Dwarfs:
