Welcome Horror Movie Night

We welcome an original Bad Movie Night member back on Friday, last seen here in December, 2010. Although there was a special away game. So in observation we'll watch movies with some real talent behind them.

Not that much of it ended up on the screen for Rawhead Rex. It will be our third Clive Barker thing, after Hellraiser and Candyman. Barker was unhappy enough with the adaptation of his short story that he went ahead and directed Hellraiser himself. I have a soft spot for the movie. One, it's a monster movie, my favorite thing. Two, it was on the cover of the first Fangoria I ever spotted, at the grocery store:

Apparently it took me a year to subscribe because I also remember my first issue I received by mail, the one with Bad Dreams on the cover:

Some of my friends were still reading Highlights.

This is our second attempt at watching Phantasm. Here's the first. That night I was surprised to find out that I, in fact, did not own Phantasm. We ended up watching Phantasm II, as evidenced by the poster post I belatedly posted. Posty. And by "We" I mean me, because I was the only one who stayed to watch it.

This will be our fourth Don Coscarelli movie: Phantasm, Phantasm II, The Beastmaster and John Dies at the End. Who's up for Kenny & Company

)

a charming coming-of-age movie from the man who thought up flying silver spheres that drill into your head.

Black Movie Night

It's our fourth Blaxploitation Month and this was the first time both movies had the word black in it. This opens up a whole new world. Black Swan! Black Snake Moan! Black Hawk Down! Meet Joe Black! Men In Black 3! Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl! And Ab Lacker, the movie about a guy who lacks abs.

The Black Hole stars the recently late Maximilian Schell and Psycho II's Anthony Perkins. It was the return of Roddy McDowall (Laserblast), Ernest Borgnine (Escape From New York) but most importantly a fourth appearance by Robert Forster (Alligator, Vigilante and Dragon Wars). You've got at least one more in you to make The Five-Timers Club, Robert. I believe in you. Anybody have The Darker Side of Terror?

As dire as The Black Gestapo was it wasn't the first Lee Frost movie we've seen. He made the wonderful Policewomen. And surely you've at least heard of The Thing With Two Heads:

Rick Baker played a gorilla in it. Weird how that doesn't narrow things down too much.

No movie this week but check out The Burning at Madison's Central Library.

Prison Movie Night

Seems like we've seen our fair share of prison movies at Bad Movie Night. Especially ones where the women are showering a lot. Forever showering... But! We haven't had a prison theme in over three-and-a-half years. That's as long as Jack Abramoff spent in prison for tax evasion. But he gets off scot-free for producing Red Scorpion?

You'll remember a year ago when Penitentiary II was dropped from Blaxploitation Month after the birth of my daughter preempted it. Well now she's ready for her first Jamaa Fanaka movie. We saw two others, Soul Vengeance and Street Wars before she existed. Those two are some of my very favorite bad movies.

Fanaka's first Penitentiary is fine but they get increasingly crazy as they go. By the time part three rolls around the main character is boxing a little person named Thud. So we'll skip the first one and head straight for the one with Mr. T and last Blaxploitation Month's Ernie Hudson.

Another BMN, low output, high put out (of quality movies) director is Tim Kincaid. You remember Breeders, Mutant Hunt and The Occultist unless your brain doesn't store awesome. Well, Bad Girls Dormitory is Kincaid's first non-porn movie (it follows Orange Hanky Left [which in handkerchief code means a top that is ready for anything]). It's a good transition movie, what with all the nudity but none of the penetration.
